Shoes may cause dorsal ulcers, especially in toes due to compression.
According to the Diabetic Foot Normative Circular of the Portuguese General Directorate for Health shoes should have:
- An elevated, wide toe box to prevent dorsal and peripheral toe injuries;
- Heels below 2 cm/Heel counter;
- Removable insole;
- A vamp that is extensible enough and can be tightened using Velcro up to near the tibial-tarsal joint in order to contain the foot preventing it from sliding when walking;
- Flexible sole;
