Shoes are the most common cause of diabetic foot?

Shoes may cause dorsal ulcers, especially in toes due to compression.

According to the Diabetic Foot Normative Circular of the Portuguese General Directorate for Health shoes should have:

  • An elevated, wide toe box to prevent dorsal and peripheral toe injuries;
  • Heels below 2 cm/Heel counter;
  • Removable insole;
  • A vamp that is extensible enough and can be tightened using Velcro up to near the tibial-tarsal joint in order to contain the foot preventing it from sliding when walking;
  • Flexible sole;
